October 29, 2015. The city of Aurora has unveiled its Comprehensive Strategic Plan, designed to better deal with immigrant affairs, and to more effectively integrate people from the 140 countries that compose Aurora. Encompassing the years of 2015 through 2018, the plan calls for providing civics and small business training, engaging in outreach through sports and recreation, and offering ESL and public safety instruction. The city’s newly created Office of International and Immigrant Affairs will be in charge of executing the plan, and will be partnering with the Aurora Welcome Center, a facility that seeks to assist immigrants who have recently relocated to Aurora, and Aurora Sister Cities International.
The city of Aurora has made a number of efforts in recent years to greater include the city’s international community in civic and public life. Some of these initiatives and programs include: its International Roundtable series, the Aurora Immigrant and Refugee Task Force, Global Fest, the Aurora Welcome Center and the reestablished Aurora Sister Cities International. However, the three-year comprehensive plan represents an even stronger commitment, designed to hone Aurora’s immigrant and refugee efforts toward the single goal of integrating these residents into the larger community.
