10,000 Children’s Books Printed and Set to Ethiopian Libraries

In June ASCI launched our new youth program Global Youth Leaders with a summer leadership camp.  The pilot camp was attended by 21 Aurora youth who participated in a week of activities focused on the 5 C’s: Character, Citizenship, Communication, Creativity, and Culture.  A big thank you to Kelly Shorb for leading the camp and to Jane McGrath for volunteering her years of experience. Lee, Myers & O’Connell Rice Drive a Success!

Despite yesterday’s snow storm, volunteers at the Law Offices of Lee, Myers & O’Connell were able to help 400 members of the local community by handing out packages of rice and noodles. Our youngest volunteer, Hanbi helped hand out packages of noodles, calendars and candies. The Mission of Councilwoman Molly Markert

Exiting councilwoman Molly Markert – who is leaving the Aurora City Council after 12 years – has a new mission: delivering eye glasses for the people of Adama, Ethiopia, Aurora’s sister city. Since visiting Adama earlier this year and noting the acute lack of eyewear, Markert has been collecting donations of glasses, which are due to be shipped to Adama later this month. City of Aurora’s Strategic Approach to Immigration

The city of Aurora has unveiled its Comprehensive Strategic Plan, designed to better deal with immigrant affairs, and to more effectively integrate people from the 140 countries that compose Aurora. Encompassing the years of 2015 through 2018, the plan calls for providing civics and small business training, engaging in outreach through sports and recreation, and offering ESL and public safety instruction. Aurora Sister Cities International (ASCI) Executive Director Karlyn Shorb and ASCI board member Tina Ye attended the U.S.-China Sister Cities Conference, which took place in Chicago during October 22-23. The conference offered ample opportunities for valuable networking, which Shorb and Ye took advantage of by connecting with Mr. Xie Yuan, Vice President, Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.  Such experiences are enormously beneficial for the future goals of Aurora Sister Cities International, which is in the process of exploring potentially establishing a sister city relationship with a Chinese municipality. Aurora’s Public Library is a Great Resource for Immigrants

However, for Aurora resident and library employee Nebeyou Nunamo, the city’s libraries have been deeply meaningful, both in a personal and professional sense. After moving to Aurora in 2011, Nunamo became a fixture at Aurora’s central library. The Colorado Association of Libraries is a volunteer-run chapter of the American Library Association, which strives to present a unified voice for the state’s library community. The association has several key focuses, which include: supporting intellectual freedom; pursuing legislative initiatives; networking with librarians and other civil servants; and providing educational opportunities and platforms for professional development. The 3rd Annual Taste of Ethiopia is coming to Denver this summer, and will take place on August 2nd, 2015 at the Parkfield Lake Park Amphitheatere. May 26, 2015.  Aurora Sister Cities International, with the support of the city of Aurora, is hosting a photo and cultural exhibit in City Hall (15151 E. CCA’s Model UN Team Explains Connection to Aurora’s Sister City of Adama

May 8, 2015.  A Community College of Aurora piece covering its Model United Nations team’s success at the world competition explains the connection between the team’s decision to request Ethiopia as the country to represent in the United Nations simulation and Aurora’s newest sister city in Ethiopia.  Aurora boasts the largest number of Ethiopian-born residents in the entire state of Colorado, and Colorado boasts one of the highest numbers of Ethiopian-born residents in the country.  Some estimates say the number is close to 30,000.  Check out the video here.

May 6, 2015. The Aurora History Museum is Aurora Sister Cities International’s newest nonprofit partner! As part of the collaboration, the Aurora History Museum has collaborated with Aurora Sister Cities International to launch a photographic and cultural exhibit in the Aurora Municipal Center which will feature photos and cultural items from our recent delegation visit to Adama, Ethiopia. Next summer, 2016, the history museum will host a larger exhibit highlighting our rich Ethiopian-born community in Aurora, and also featuring more cultural items from our sister city of Adama, Ethiopia. Mayor Steve Hogan to travel to Seongnam City

May 4, 2015. Mayor Steve Hogan will be visiting Aurora’s sister city of Seongnam City, South Korea from May 4, 2015 through May 8, 2015.The purpose of the visit is to re-establish ties and begin discussion of a trade and tourism mission to Seongnam City in the fall.
