Jaco, Costa Rica (Est. 1988)


Jaco is located 75 kilometers from the Costa Rican capital of San Jose on the Pacific coast. It is one of the fastest-growing areas in the country thanks to it’s reputation as a popular tourist destination for both Costa Ricans and visitors. It features a 2.5 mile long beach that offers some of the best surfing in Costa Rica. Popular tourist activites include surfing, swimming, fishing, white water rafting, snorkeling, and zip-lining through the Costa Rican rain forests that can be found within 35 kilometers of the city.

Jaco, Costa Rica became Aurora’s first Sister City when a formal agreement was signed in 1988. Some activities Aurora participated in with Jaco include:

  • 1988: Aurora engineer assisted with water and sewage projects in Jaco .
  • 1989: Kiwanis Club of Aurora donated a hundred children’s books to Jaco.
  • 1990: Developed an exhibit of Costa Rican artifacts at the Denver Museum of Natural History.
  • 1994: Hosted a reception for 19 Costa Rican exchange students.

As of 2016 this sister city relationship is currently dormant.
