On March 2023 ,

the Aurora City Council approved our resolution to move forward with a sister partnership with the City of Chihuahua, Chihuahua State, Mexico. Aurora's largest foreign-born community comes from Mexico, and most of those folks call Chihuahua their native home. Many more second and third generation Americans also trace their roots back to Chihuahua. We are proud of the hard work put in by our Aurora-Mexico Sister City Committee to realize this partnership opportunity, and we are incredibly grateful to Mayor Mike Coffman and all of City Council for supporting the resolution.

What is the history of Chihuahua ?

The Spanish largely ignored the harsh deserts of Chihuahua, home to nomadic peoples such as the Chichimeca. The city was officially founded by Spanish captain Antonio Deza y Ulloa in 1709, though it was originally dubbed “Real de Minas de San Francisco de Cuellar” after nearby silver mines. It remained small and largely unimportant well into the 19th century, though the Spanish imprisoned and later executed Independence hero Miguel Hidalgo here in 1811. The city received a boost when President Benito Juárez made Chihuahua his capital-in-exile during the French Intervention of the 1860s, and its growing importance led to Pancho Villa establishing his base here during the Mexican Revolution.
