Celebrating Asian & Pacific American Heritage Month May 2024
This May, we join the nation in celebrating Asian & Pacific American Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich history, culture, and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the United States. The observance not only commemorates the contributions of Asians and Pacific Islanders but also reflects on their struggles, triumphs, and the ongoing journey towards recognition and equality.
The month of May was chosen to mark Asian & Pacific American Heritage Month to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, largely built by Chinese immigrants. These dates are a testament to the long-standing history and influence of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the building and shaping of America.
In 2024, we reflect on the theme of resilience and innovation, recognizing the ways in which the AAPI community has enriched America’s culture, economy, and spirit. From advancements in technology and science to contributions in arts and cuisine, the AAPI community continues to play a pivotal role in America’s diverse tapestry.
Throughout this month, esteemed institutions such as the Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join hands in paying tribute to the generations of Asians and Pacific Islanders who have played an indispensable role in shaping the American narrative.
We encourage everyone to engage with this rich heritage through the myriad of events, exhibitions, and educational resources available. To delve deeper into the stories, achievements, and contributions of the AAPI community, we recommend visiting the official Asian & Pacific American Heritage Month website at www.asianpacificheritage.gov. Here, you will find a treasure trove of information, including virtual exhibitions, historical records, and a calendar of nationwide events celebrating AAPI heritage.
This month, let us all take a moment to recognize, appreciate, and celebrate the enduring spirit and invaluable contributions of the Asian and Pacific American community. Their stories are American stories, and by understanding and embracing our diverse roots, we pave the way for a more inclusive and vibrant future for all.
