Think The Olympics Are Just About Sports?

Did you know that the Olympic games are more than just sports?  The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.  This year’s theme is “Become the Light” which aims to promote the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.  The International Olympic Committee is partnering with the UN Refugee Agency and has a combined mission to provide light in refugee camps.  The UN Refugee Agency notes that at least 22 million people live in refugee camps and without access to light, the ability to work, play or learn is impeded.  Learn more about the plan to add sustainable solar lights to refugee camps in Rwanda HERE.

Another program aimed at providing global peace is Sport For Hope. This program “centers also serve as platforms for social development and innovative cooperation to contribute to a better and more peaceful world through sport”.
