Ilopango is a municipality of El Salvador located within metropolitan San Salvador, El Salvador’s capital city and county. The city boasts the highest per capita income in El Salvador and is considered an economic hub of the country. It is home to 36, 698 residents.
Currently Ilopango is home to the American embassy in El Salvador as well as many businesses in banking, media, and other industries. It is also home to many universities including the regionally well-known Central American University.

A popular tourist destination in Ilopango is a volcanic caldera located in El Salvador. Ilopango is a large volcanic caldera situated in the central part of El Salvador. It is formed by the collapse of a massive volcanic cone during a major eruption thousands of years ago.
