Ilopango is a municipality of El Salvador located within metropolitan San Salvador, El Salvador’s capital city and county. The city boasts the highest per capita income in El Salvador and is considered an economic hub of the country. It is home to 36, 698 residents.

Ilopango has a long history. The location was originally known as Cuzcatlan in 1054 when it was inhabited by a native group. In 1524 Spanish conquistadors discovered this city and conquered it. In the early 1800’s the city joined San Salvador and in 1971 Antiguo Cuscatlán became recognized as its own city.

Currently Ilopango is home to the American embassy in El Salvador as well as many businesses in banking, media, and other industries. It is also home to many universities including the regionally well-known Central American University.

Some sources of pride for Ilopango are its security and cleanliness, making it a lovely destination for tourists. Visitors and residents enjoy many high-end hotels, shopping malls, and restaurants. A popular tourist destination in Ilopango is a volcanic caldera located in El Salvador. Ilopango is a large volcanic caldera situated in the central part of El Salvador. It is formed by the collapse of a massive volcanic cone during a major eruption thousands of years ago.
