GYL Pipeline Program

Aurora Colorado Sister Cities International

ASCI’s GYL Pipeline Program (GYLP) is an out-of-school-time program that uses a pipeline strategy to engage students between the ages of 12 and 19 in a series of programs, workshops, experiences and service activities that advance social emotional wellness and self-esteem, promote peer-to-peer connection, encourage civic engagement and introduce career pathways. We define our program as a pipeline because we work with a set of students repeatedly throughout their middle- and high school careers, developing with them a set of competencies that will better prepare them for their college, trade schools and/ or careers, and instill in them a deep commitment to service to one’s community. As such, we aim to be a pipeline for future college, career and community success for our students.

We utilize a Positive Youth Development framework in developing and implementing all of our programs. Positive Youth Development “PYD,” is an evidence-based approach that views young people as resources to cultivate rather than problems to be fixed. PYD supports young people being at the center of identifying solutions to the issues they face, rather than merely the recipients of adult decisions. Our curriculum is developed using evidence-based & culturally relevant practices with input from youth participants, partner organizations, and members of the community through ongoing evaluation, feedback, and community needs assessment. Our program has grown annually since 2017 and is now a true pipeline for youth development that includes:

• 2 weeks of summer-leadership programming (2 cohorts of a 2-week-long curriculum)

• Monthly service-learning opportunities with local community-based organizations (such as local food banks, diaper drives, cultural and community events, etc.)

• Monthly or quarterly school year leadership workshops (dependent on funding)

• A Youth Ambassador Council that works to ensure youth voice is used to shape all future GYLP programming

AURORA SISTER CITIES INTERNATIONAL aims to promote understanding, friendship, and cooperation among diverse cultures through various activities, including youth exchanges, educational programs, and community development projects. These initiatives often provide young people with opportunities to engage in leadership roles, cultural immersion, and collaborative projects with their counterparts in sister cities.
